Watch the documentary The City of Greater New York: The Story of the Consolidation
This hourlong video was created for the city’s 100th birthday in 1998. It recounts the efforts of a civic visionary, Andrew H. Green, to unite the separate municipalities around New York Harbor into the five-borough metropolis that exists today. You’ll learn about Green’s opponents from Brooklyn who fought to keep their city independent, and the political boss, Thomas C. Platt, who strong-armed the consolidation bill through the legislature. There are fascinating and fun side stories all along the way.
The documentary aired on television and at the Museum of the City of New York. It features an all-star cast of voices including Frances Sternhagen (narrator), Richard Kiley (Platt), and Steven Hill (Green); and insights from top historians like David C. Hammack and Richard L. McCormick.
